Former Damansara MP Tony Pua says voting in another coalition at the next general election would carry the risk of undoing the progress achieved over the past four years.
SUBANG JAYA: The burgeoning cooperation between Barisan Nasional and PAS as seen in Johor could lead to all the good work of the Pakatan Harapan-led federal government being undone after the next general election, says DAP’s Tony Pua.
He said voters at the next general election would have to choose between “Anwar Ibrahim, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, or worse, Abdul Hadi Awang”, referring to the leaders of PH, BN and PAS as candidates to be prime minister.
Pua said it was “very important” for voters to note the collaboration between PAS and BN, where the two parties were working to edge out PH at the Johor state election.
BN and PH are competing against each other in all 56 seats in the Johor state election, while PAS is contesting 11 seats and has urged its supporters to vote for BN in seats that the party is not competing.
Pua said voters at the next general election should ensure that PH is given another term in government as voting in another coalition would carry the risk of undoing the progress achieved over the past four years.
“What you don’t want to do is dump a government that has done so much and pick another that reverses everything that has been achieved over the last three or four years,” he said at Subang Jaya DAP’s fundraising dinner.
He said the country had consistently recorded a growth rate of more than 5% despite global economic uncertainty, continued to attract foreign investment and welcomed more tourists, while the ringgit had become stronger.
Pua, a former Damansara MP who served as an economic adviser to former finance minister Lim Guan Eng, said these achievements were signs that the country was “on the right track” and that the PH-led unity government should be given another opportunity to build on it.
The current federal government is formed by a unity coalition comprising PH, BN, and East Malaysian parties, with PH chairman Anwar Ibrahim as prime minister. The opposition is formed by PAS, Bersatu, and others.
