KUALA LUMPUR, July 3 — Transport Minister Anthony Loke has corrected claims regarding the maintenance costs of the Automated Awareness Safety System (AwAS), clarifying that the actual annual cost for a single camera unit is approximately RM112,800 and not the RM337,000 figure frequently cited.

In a written parliamentary reply yesterday, Loke explained that the RM112,800 figure covers essential preventive maintenance, repairs, and periodic calibration.

He said that the higher, commonly referenced total actually reflects the system’s entire operational ecosystem rather than the maintenance of individual cameras.

This includes centralised components such as back-office systems and the printing of summonses, all of which are critical to keeping the system operational and effective.

The clarification came in response to a query from Shaharizukirnain Abd. Kadir (Setiu), who questioned the high costs of the system and asked if an independent audit would be conducted to assess its return on investment (ROI).

Loke countered that the effectiveness of AwAS should not be measured by financial returns alone, but by its impact on road safety and driver compliance.

He highlighted the “Perception of Being Caught” (POBC) as a key performance indicator, noting that over 90 per cent of road users at camera locations feel they are likely to be detected and penalised.

This perception, he argued, encourages adherence to speed limits and reduces accident risks in high-risk areas.

Loke further noted that the Road Transport Department (JPJ) manages the implementation of AwAS through an open and competitive tender process to ensure fair pricing.

While defending the current expenditure, Loke pledged the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability, saying he remains open to an independent audit or periodic evaluations to ensure the AwAS system continues to deliver optimal safety benefits for the nation.
