OpenAI announced a new family of AI models on Thursday called GPT-5.6, with three tiers named Sol, Terra, and Luna. The names quickly caught attention in crypto circles because of their close ties to well-known blockchain projects.

Sol shares its name with the ticker for Solana, one of the largest cryptocurrencies by market cap. Terra and Luna were the names behind a blockchain ecosystem that collapsed in 2022, wiping out tens of billions of dollars in value.

OpenAI was clear that the names were not chosen as a reference to crypto. The company said the names represent different levels of capability across its model range.

What Each Model Does

Sol is the flagship, designed for the most demanding tasks. Terra sits in the middle, offering performance close to the previous GPT-5.5 model at half the price. Luna is the entry-level option, built for speed and low cost.

Sol comes with new “max” and “ultra” reasoning modes. The ultra mode uses multiple sub-agents working together to handle complex tasks faster.

OpenAI said Sol sets a new benchmark on Terminal-Bench 2.1, which tests command-line coding tasks. It also showed improvements in biology and cybersecurity work.

On cybersecurity specifically, OpenAI said Sol can help find and fix vulnerabilities. The company added that it does not cross the “Cyber Critical” threshold under its internal safety framework, meaning it cannot independently produce a full working exploit.

Limited Release and Safety Testing

The launch is not a full public release. OpenAI described it as a “limited preview” available to a small group of trusted partners. The company said it is still running safety tests before wider availability.

The White House reportedly asked OpenAI to keep the rollout restricted while the government works on a new cybersecurity executive order framework.

OpenAI used over 700,000 GPU hours on automated red-teaming to stress-test the models before launch. Human experts also tested the models for ways they could be misused.

The company said safeguards are layered, including protections built into the model, real-time content checks, and account-level monitoring.

Pricing for the API is set at $5 input and $30 output per million tokens for Sol. Terra comes in at $2.50 input and $15 output. Luna is priced at $1 input and $6 output.

OpenAI also announced it will launch Sol on Cerebras hardware in July, offering speeds of up to 750 tokens per second.

The company said it plans to make all three models available more broadly through ChatGPT and the API in the coming weeks.
