Vitalik Buterin donates 64 ETH (~$147K) to the Animal Welfare Fund, calls factory farming a moral failure, and says synthetic food could finally end it this century.

The wallet move did not go to a layer-2 grant. It did not fund a validator set. Sixty-four ETH left Buterin’s address and landed at the Animal Welfare Fund.

That works out to roughly $147,000 at current prices. Writing on X, VitalikButerin said he sent the funds and kept the post short. He called on others to think harder about what he described as “our non-human cousins.” The suffering imposed on animals in the billions, he wrote, rarely comes up in serious conversation. It keeps going anyway.

What Gets Said When Nobody Is Watching

Factory farming gets treated as a settled, uncomfortable fact. Most people know it exists.

Buterin is not interested in that framing. “The extreme suffering we’re imposing on them in the billions is not something we talk about often,” he posted on X, “but it continues to be one of the larger blights on humanity.” He did not attach a nonprofit press release. No co-signers. He put it out and moved on.

Then a second post appeared.

On X again, VitalikButerin addressed shrimp. Directly. He wrote that most people treat shrimp welfare as a joke taken too far by academics. The reality, he said, is different. He pointed readers toward research on eyestalk ablation. It is a commercial shrimp farming practice where part of the eyestalk is removed or damaged to accelerate reproduction. Standard industry procedure. Rarely discussed outside trade publications.

He phrased it simply: ask your bot about it.

The Food Argument Nobody Expected

Buterin’s donation history goes back years and crosses continents. In 2021, he transferred over a billion dollars worth of SHIB to an India COVID relief fund. He has directed ETH toward open-source research and public health in various forms since. Animal welfare has appeared in his public comments with growing frequency.

The optimism in his latest post stood out. Farming practices are improving, he wrote. Synthetic food alternatives are getting there too. He said this century could actually end factory farming. Not as a hope. More as a prediction he appears to have already priced in.

The Ethereum Foundation, which recently advanced Glamsterdam testing and reshuffled its Protocol Cluster leadership, has long channeled resources toward causes Buterin considers foundational. Animal welfare sits outside that work. That is apparently not a reason to leave it alone.

He Wants You to Try the Food Again

There was one part of the post that did not read like philanthropy at all.

Buterin told anyone who tried vegetarian or vegan food years ago and gave up to take another look. He said good low-tech plant-based food has improved significantly over the past decade. The “pasta and salad” version of it, as he put it, is not what it is anymore. Options have multiplied. The quality is different enough now that old impressions may not hold.

He did not name brands. No sponsored mentions. He made the point the way someone makes a point after they have already tested it themselves.

Whether the crypto world follows him into any of this is a separate matter entirely. He has been pushing unconventional arguments in public for years. The $147,000 went out. The posts are up. The shrimp comment alone will likely generate more discussion than the donation itself.

Per the posts, he seems fine with that.
