Can You Short Anthropic Stock? How Shorting ANT Works Before and After the IPO

Searches for "short Anthropic stock" are still rare, because there is no Anthropic stock on a public exchange to short.

That changes the moment ANT starts trading, and the mechanics before and after that day are quite different.

This guide explains how short positions work in each phase and what risks come with them, without telling you whether to take one.

Key Takeaways

  • Before the IPO, brokers cannot short Anthropic stock because no listed shares exist to borrow.
  • Derivatives such as a pre-IPO perpetual contract can hold a short position on expected valuation.
  • After listing, short selling needs borrowable shares.
  • A short position's losses have no fixed limit.

Can You Short Anthropic Stock Before the IPO?

You cannot short Anthropic stock through a broker before the IPO, because short selling requires shares that can be borrowed and no Anthropic shares are listed yet.

Anthropic's existing shares are private, and its help center says any transfer without board approval is void, so there is no lending market for them.

Derivatives are the only place a short position can exist before listing.

On MEXC, the Anthropic Pre-IPO perpetual contract lets traders open long or short positions that track Anthropic's expected company valuation, settled in USDT.

A short position in that contract is not a short sale of stock: no shares are borrowed or delivered, and the position is tied to an index price rather than to a share.

How this contract compares with tokens and other pre-IPO products is explained in our guide to Anthropic tokenized stock.

How Does Shorting ANT Work After the IPO?

After the IPO, shorting ANT works like shorting any listed stock: a broker borrows shares for you, you sell them, and you later buy shares back to return them.

The SEC's Key Points About Regulation SHO explains that, before a short sale, a broker must have reasonable grounds to believe the shares can be borrowed and delivered, a step known as the "locate."

Newly listed stocks are often hard to borrow in the first days, because only the shares sold in the IPO are free to trade and to lend.

When few shares are available to lend, borrowing fees tend to rise, and a broker may decline new short sales altogether.

How Do Lock-Up Periods Affect Shorting ANT?

Lock-up periods limit how many ANT shares can be lent, because shares held by insiders and early investors cannot be sold for a set period after the IPO.

A lock-up period keeps much of a new company's stock out of the market at first.

As lock-ups end, more shares can trade and potentially be lent, which can change borrowing supply and costs.

Anthropic's release schedule is summarized in our Anthropic IPO prospectus walkthrough.

What Other Tools Exist for Short Exposure to ANT After Listing?

After listing, the main alternatives to a short sale are stock futures and listed options, and each works differently from borrowing shares.

  • ANT stock futures: on MEXC, the Anthropic Pre-IPO perpetual is set to convert into a standard ANT stock futures contract once the stock trades, and that contract can be held long or short.
  • Listed options: US options exchanges list options on a new stock only after it meets their listing criteria, and MEXC does not offer options.

Under a 2023 amendment to Cboe's Rule 4.3, options on an IPO stock with a market value of at least $3 billion at the offering price can be listed starting on the second business day after the IPO day.

Whether and when options on ANT appear depends on the exchanges' own decisions.

Short Sale vs Short Futures Position: What Is the Difference?

A short sale involves borrowing and selling real shares, while a short futures position is a contract with another party, and the two carry different costs and obligations.

A short seller owes the lender the shares, pays a borrow fee, and can be asked to return the shares if the loan is recalled.

A short seller may also owe the lender any dividends the company pays while the shares are on loan.

A short futures position involves no shares at all, so there is no borrow fee or recall, but it requires margin and can be closed out if that margin runs low.

On a perpetual contract, the funding rate takes the place of a borrow fee, and it can be paid or received depending on market conditions.

Neither approach changes the basic math: if the price goes up, a short position loses money.

What Are the Risks of Shorting Anthropic Stock?

The main risks of shorting are open-ended losses, short squeezes, ongoing costs and leverage, and all four apply to ANT and to contracts that track it.

  • Losses without a fixed limit: the SEC notes that shorting a stock leaves an investor open to the possibility of unlimited losses, because a price can keep rising.
  • Short squeeze: when many short sellers rush to buy back at once, their buying can push the price higher still.
  • Ongoing costs: stock borrowers pay borrow fees, and perpetual contracts charge or pay a periodic funding rate.
  • Leverage: leverage magnifies gains and losses, and a leveraged position can be liquidated if the price moves against it.

New listings add their own layer of volatility, since the first days of trading set the price for the first time.

The way perpetual contracts are priced and margined is covered in the MEXC glossary.

When Will ANT Be Available to Short?

ANT will be available for broker short sales only after it lists on Nasdaq, and no listing date has been announced as of November 5, 2026.

The roadshow cannot begin before November 10 under the SEC's 15-day rule, and pricing follows the roadshow.

Each step from roadshow to first trade is tracked in the Anthropic IPO date and status guide.

MEXC View: Understand the Mechanics Before Anything Else

Our view is that a short position on a brand-new listing is one of the more complex positions in markets, and its mechanics deserve more attention than the headlines.

Borrow availability, lock-up timing, funding rates and leverage can each change the cost of a short position, wherever the price goes.

Before listing, a short position in MEXC's Anthropic Pre-IPO perpetual tracks expected valuation, and at listing the contract converts to ANT stock futures, so its reference price changes.

Leverage limits and liquidation rules are set out on each contract page, and reading them first is part of understanding the risk.

We do not take a view on the direction of Anthropic's price, and nothing in this article is a suggestion to open a position.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you short Anthropic stock?

Not through a broker until ANT lists, because short selling needs listed shares that can be borrowed.

How do you short Anthropic stock after the IPO?

A broker locates and borrows ANT shares, sells them, and you later buy shares back to return them.

Can you short the Anthropic IPO before it lists?

Only through derivatives such as a pre-IPO perpetual contract, which tracks expected valuation and involves no shares.

Why are new IPOs hard to short?

Few shares are free to lend in the first days, because insiders' shares are usually under lock-up.

Will there be options on ANT?

That depends on US options exchanges, whose rules allow large IPO stocks to get options as early as the second business day after the IPO day.

What is the biggest risk of shorting a stock?

The SEC notes that a short position can face unlimited losses if the price keeps rising.

Conclusion

Before ANT lists, a short position on Anthropic can only exist in a derivative that tracks expected valuation.

After listing, short selling depends on borrowable shares, lock-up timing and broker rules, and the risks stay open-ended either way.
