  • Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro said the Caribbean coast could become a Bitcoin mining hub by using surplus renewable energy.
  • He pointed to Barranquilla, Santa Marta, and Riohacha as possible mining locations.
  • He suggested the Wayúu indigenous community could become co-owners of the project.

President Gustavo Petro intends to transform the Caribbean coastline into a global center for digital technology. He believes surplus renewable energy can drive a massive economic shift through Bitcoin mining. It’s a daring plan that would see the region’s natural resources converted into liquid digital gold.

Strategic Sites for Bitcoin Mining Expansion

In a post on X on Tuesday, Petro stated that the Caribbean cities of Barranquilla, Santa Marta, and Riohacha could host Bitcoin (BTC) mining facilities.

According to him, this could tap into the country’s clean energy supplies, comparable to Venezuela and Paraguay in previous years.

The sites provide strategic connections to current electrical networks and worldwide shipping routes. Riohacha serves as a vital location for establishing Bitcoin mining operations, which will become operational in the coming years.

Petro’s comments were in reaction to a post by Luxor Technology’s Alessandro Cecere, who stated that Paraguay’s share of Bitcoin hashrate has increased to 4.3% since it began using hydroelectric electricity at its Itaipu dam.

Investors are already focused with a keen interest on Colombia’s coastal developments with high hopes. The government hopes for huge capital inflows from international tech companies that wish to invest in sustainable energy.

With that in mind, Bitcoin mining may be one of the main sources of foreign direct investments soon.

Empowering Indigenous Communities Through BTC

Petro suggested a unique model involving the Wayúu indigenous community in these digital ventures. He wants local tribes to act as co-owners of the new energy and mining projects.

The local community receives all advantages which Bitcoin mining operations generate through this method.

The President promotes social fairness and technological development for the Caribbean coastal region. The state is building a decentralized economy which benefits everyone through its integration of Wayúu people.

The partnership will create new methods for the nation to control its natural resources and digital resources.

The model undergoes analysis by experts while its backers demonstrate its operation in actual environments. Petro believes that shared ownership will protect rural areas from exploitation. He sees Bitcoin mining as a means to achieve financial and social freedom.

Regional Competition in Bitcoin Mining Infrastructure

Colombia is not the first South American nation to explore this lucrative digital path. Venezuela and Paraguay are previous examples of how energy surpluses have been used to lure global miners.

Now Petro wants to outdo these neighbours by concentrating on only green energy sources.

The shift towards Bitcoin mining follows a larger trend of sovereign BTC adoption. This shift positions the country as a leader in the regional crypto economy.

Moreover, the shift towards a Bitcoin-based economy would insulate the country from fluctuations in the fiat currency. Numerous experts think that keeping BTC is a hedge versus global inflationary pressures.

Ultimately, Petro’s vision combines environmental goals with a robust and modern financial strategy.

Franklin Templeton CEO Dismisses 50bps Rate Cut Ahead FOMC

The post Franklin Templeton CEO Dismisses 50bps Rate Cut Ahead FOMC appeared on BitcoinEthereumNews.com. Franklin Templeton CEO Jenny Johnson has weighed in on whether the Federal Reserve should make a 25 basis points (bps) Fed rate cut or 50 bps cut. This comes ahead of the Fed decision today at today’s FOMC meeting, with the market pricing in a 25 bps cut. Bitcoin and the broader crypto market are currently trading flat ahead of the rate cut decision. Franklin Templeton CEO Weighs In On Potential FOMC Decision In a CNBC interview, Jenny Johnson said that she expects the Fed to make a 25 bps cut today instead of a 50 bps cut. She acknowledged the jobs data, which suggested that the labor market is weakening. However, she noted that this data is backward-looking, indicating that it doesn’t show the current state of the economy. She alluded to the wage growth, which she remarked is an indication of a robust labor market. She added that retail sales are up and that consumers are still spending, despite inflation being sticky at 3%, which makes a case for why the FOMC should opt against a 50-basis-point Fed rate cut. In line with this, the Franklin Templeton CEO said that she would go with a 25 bps rate cut if she were Jerome Powell. She remarked that the Fed still has the October and December FOMC meetings to make further cuts if the incoming data warrants it. Johnson also asserted that the data show a robust economy. However, she noted that there can’t be an argument for no Fed rate cut since Powell already signaled at Jackson Hole that they were likely to lower interest rates at this meeting due to concerns over a weakening labor market. Notably, her comment comes as experts argue for both sides on why the Fed should make a 25 bps cut or…
