Dubbed “Patching as a Service,” the solution focuses on Japan’s 3,000 largest corporations managing essential infrastructure — including airports, electrical grids, and transit systems.

SB OAI Japan, the equally-owned partnership between SoftBank Corp and OpenAI established last November, will deliver the service. This collaboration was designed specifically to build and distribute AI solutions exclusively within Japan’s commercial landscape.

CEO Masayoshi Son spoke bluntly about the severity of the threat. He drew a stark analogy, describing Japan’s current cyber preparedness as being armed with outdated weapons against modern warfare.

Platform Mechanics Explained

The solution operates through a dual-phase approach: initially identifying system vulnerabilities, followed by determining appropriate patch requirements. During his presentation, Son consistently described cyber criminals as “the bad guys.”

SoftBank Corp CEO Junichi Miyakawa revealed the current deployment team consists of roughly 50 professionals, with ambitious plans to expand to 1,000 personnel.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman was expected to attend physically but participated through a brief video message instead. He offered a straightforward explanation — his daughter arrived ahead of schedule. OpenAI Chief Research Officer Mark Chen represented the company onsite.

SoftBank’s Strategic Investment in OpenAI

SoftBank ranks among OpenAI’s most significant financial backers. The company’s total pledged investment in OpenAI will hit $64.6 billion by late 2026.

This cybersecurity platform represents another milestone in their expanding collaboration. Since establishing SB OAI Japan last year, both organizations have been developing AI integration capabilities tailored for Japanese enterprises.

Last week, U.S. authorities restricted foreign nationals’ access to Anthropic’s Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models over national security considerations — highlighting the increasingly complex intersection of artificial intelligence and security worldwide.

Both SoftBank Corp (9434.T) and SoftBank Group (9984.T) took part in Tuesday’s corporate announcement event in Tokyo.
