Google and British-Sierra Leonean actor Idris Elba are teaming up on a $1 million initiative to equip African content creators with artificial intelligence tools. The program will cover the cost of Google’s Gemini AI assistant and other digital products for roughly 100,000 creators across five African countries.

Announced today, the partnership will benefit creators in Nigeria, South Africa, Ghana, Kenya, and Sierra Leone. Funding comes from both Google and Elba Hope Foundation, according to James Manyika, Google’s Senior Vice President for Research and Technology.

The goal is to help creators produce higher-quality content faster and at a lower cost, removing the financial barrier that has historically kept advanced AI tools out of reach for many African creators, despite the continent’s enormous creative output.

The initiative arrives at a time when AI is rapidly reshaping how content is created globally. Tools like Gemini can assist with writing, image generation, video production, translation, research, and a range of other creative tasks that would otherwise require significant time, technical expertise, or money. For an independent creator in Lagos, Accra, or Nairobi trying to build an audience and a sustainable income, access to those tools at no cost is a meaningful competitive advantage.

Idris Elba, born in London to a Sierra Leonean father and Ghanaian mother, has grown increasingly vocal about the need to invest in African creative industries. His foundation’s involvement in this initiative reflects a growing recognition among prominent African diaspora figures that the continent’s next generation of storytellers needs infrastructure and tools, not just inspiration.

Why this matters for African creators

Africa’s creative economy is one of its most overlooked assets. Nigeria’s Nollywood is the world’s second-largest film industry by output. Afrobeats racked up over 13 billion Spotify streams in a single year.

African creators on YouTube, podcasts, fashion, and digital art are building global audiences from cities like Kampala, Cape Town, and Abuja. But the tools, infrastructure, and technology that creators in the US and Europe take for granted have often been too expensive or unavailable in Africa.

AI changes that equation, but only with equitable access. A creator in Sierra Leone who can’t afford a $20 monthly subscription to a premium AI tool is locked out of capabilities their counterparts in wealthier markets use daily. The Google-Elba initiative tackles that gap directly, using philanthropic and corporate funding to bridge the access divide for 100,000 creators in one move.

The five countries were chosen for two reasons: they already have large creator communities, and they’re strategically important to Africa’s digital economy. Nigeria and South Africa are the continent’s two biggest economies with the most developed creator scenes. Ghana and Kenya have become lively hubs for digital content and creative tech work. Sierra Leone, Elba’s heritage country, shows the initiative’s commitment to reaching beyond the obvious markets.

For Google, the initiative also advances its goal of expanding AI adoption and digital participation in emerging markets, where its long-term user growth will increasingly be determined. Making Gemini the tool of choice for 100,000 African creators today is also a deliberate bet on who builds the next wave of content that African audiences will consume tomorrow.
